Since 1976, Dave Brenton, General Manager of Rural Tennessee Wireless Broadband, has been fascinated by computers.
"I wrote my first program in BASIC in '76," says Dave, "and I was hooked."
Working for various high tech firms over the years, Dave has developed this love of technology into a career spanning over three decades.
"I began my 'techie' career fixing hi-fi stereos, and upon attending Tech School in Arizona, began working toward a thorough understanding of digital technology.
"When I began learning, microprocessors were new. Within months of this new technology coming to my attention, I was using them in my work and it's been a wild ride since then."
Dave later worked for Motorola Government Electronics Group, helping to design and construct state-of-the-art space radio equipment, using microprocessors for command, control, and signal processing functions. Among the many uses for his radios was the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory satellite, which studied the echos left over from the "Big Bang." (For more, visit the NASA webpage: About the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory.)
"As a kid, I wanted to be a part of the space program. I guess through my work with Motorola for Goddard Spaceflight Systems, I got my wish."
In mid 2006, Dave began looking for a better way to get high speed internet into his home and office. The solutions seem few and far between. As he explored the possibilities, he kept discovering that others in the Stewart County area wanted fast internet, too. Thus began the quest to bring RTWB to life.
"It's taken a lot more time to develop this plan than I had hoped," Dave remarks, "but I can say with certainty after this much study and planning, the RTWB network will be as strong and reliable a network as anything ever brought to rural America anywhere."
